"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile admirers have openly begged for the position.

It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"So all is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the band will always be their top commitment.

"We have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
