European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
